The Bellingham International Airport has experienced an unprecedented growth from 70,000 passengers in 2005 to over 500,000 in 2012. This increase in traffic has created the need for a major expansion of the terminal from the current 23,000 Sq. Ft. to 108,000 Sq. Ft. The work is being accomplished in two phases. Phase I added a new 500 seat gate lobby area of 20,000 Sq. Ft. The airport had to remain fully operational and secure during the construction phase. The project was carefully planned and sequenced so that the contractor could be productive, passengers remain safe and whole departments or areas temporarily relocated while the new work took pace. This increase in traffic required a major expansion of the terminal from 23,000 Sq. Ft. to 108,000 Sq. Ft. The work was accomplished in two phases. The $7.1M Phase I was completed in the spring of 2011.
Phase II remodeled the existing terminal and added 65,000 Sq. Ft. including new baggage claim and baggage make-up areas, enlarged and relocated ticketing and security check points and entire building fire protection and sprinkler upgrades. The airport remained fully operational and secure during the construction phase.
